How to choose a Best Hyundai Kia diagnostic tool

Hyundai and Kia dealer level diagnostic scan tool reviews and recommendations.

If you are serious about diagnosing your Hyundai and Kia car problems you need to get an advanced OBD2 scanner. In this article, you will learn how to choose the best OBD2 scanner for Hyundai.

An advanced OBD2 scanner can diagnose the check engine light and anything related to the Engine Control Unit but it can also read, clear and reset fault codes from systems such as:

  • Airbag / SRS – Can help you figure out why the airbag light is on.
  • Transmission – Troubleshoot Hyundai transmission problems and clear codes.
  • Electronic Stability Control – Find out why the traction control light or ABS light are illuminated.
  • Reset TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system)

The scanners listed here do just that and provide similar or close functionality to dealer level scanners yet don’t cost as much and are reasonably priced for most DIYers.

Note: If all you need is to check and clear codes related to the Check Engine Light (Service Engine Soon), you can get a simple $20 OBD-II code reader.  See here Cheap OBD2 Code Reader .

Note that the scanners listed here work in both Hyundai and Kia. Even though Kia is a different brand its parent company is Hyundai Motor Group and they both share the same software.

Before we look at some of the best OBD2 diagnostic scanners for Hyundai and Kia, you need to understand what scanner Hyundai dealers use.

HYUNDAI GDS DEALER SCANNER TOOL

hyundai gds scanner

The Hi-Scan Pro was the factory scanner for Hyundai vehicles in the past, currently, G.I.T is the OEM manufacturer of the scan tool called Global Diagnostic System (GDS) which is used at Hyundai and Kia dealers.

Hyundai GDS diagnostic scanner will give you full control of the systems on your Hyundai / Kia. With the GDS you are able to diagnose and reprogram control units. The original GDS scanner can get very expensive for Hyundai/Kia owners.

The Hyundai GDS costs thousands of dollars and requires yearly updates which for Hyundai owner’s doesn’t make sense unless you are an auto repair shop who specializes on Hyundai and Kia. Based on capabilities of the Hyundai GDS scanner below we have listed several OBD2 scanners that provide most of the functions of the GDS but only cost between $150-$500. We have provided links to online retailer sites where we found the lowest price on any of these scanners.

Wondering what’s the best obd2 scanner for Hyundai cars? Let us look the Top alternatives to Hyundai GDS

TOP 5 BEST OBD-II SCANNERS FOR HYUNDAI

5. G-scan Scanner for Hyundai Kia

hyundai-g-scan

G.I.T. who makes the OEM diagnostic scanner for Hyundai and Kia dealers makes a second scanner called G-Scan (seconds generation G-scan2) with similar capabilities to the Hyundai GDS scanner but can be used by auto repair shops. The G-scan tool provides dealer lever control and functionality and is able to access all the systems on your Hyundai vehicles. The main difference between Hyundai G-Scan tool and Hyundai GDS is that the G-Scan can not access the Hyundai dealer network and it can not do reflashing. The G-scan is much cheaper than the Hyundai GDS scanner but it is still expensive for Hyundai and Kia owners. There are other OBD2 scanners that provide in-depth diagnostic that still cost less than Hyundai G-Scan tool.

This is an OBD2 scanner that is affordable for Hyundai owners and is able to scan the ABS, SRS/Airbag, Engine and Transmission on Hyundai and Kia cars, SUVs and VANs. As a Hyundai owner who needs to know why the transmission is not shifting or why the ABS or SRS lights are on, this is a great scanner. It is easy to use and it costs as much as one visit to the mechanic. The main advantage of the Launch Creader is that it can diagnose over 20 different car brands, not just Hyundai and Kia.

Details:

  • Works on most European, Asian and Domestic vehicles
  • Can troubleshoot Engine, Transmission, ABS, and SRS/Airbag
  • Can read and clear Engine DTC Code.

2.  AUTEL MAXIDAS DS708/Autel DS808

autel-maxidas-ds708

The MaxiDAS DS708 provides in-depth troubleshooting and diagnostic similar to Hyundai GDS and G-Scan. It is able to access most of the systems on your Hyundai/Kia, not just the ABS, SRS, ECU and TCU. This is the best alternative to Hyundai GDS. The MaxiDAS is able to erase, clear, activate sensors, program and initialize control units. Even though it is a professional level diagnostic scanner it is relatively easy to use and much less expensive than Hyundai GDS. You see this scanner often used at independent auto repair shops. While it is one of the least expensive professional OBDII scan tools, it is on the expensive side for most Hyundai and Kia owners that do occasional repairs.

Details:

  • Extensive vehicle coverage for more than 50 Domestic, Asian and European vehicle makes
  • Dealer level capability including live data, ECU programming.
  • Key Coding functionality, Component Activation testing.
  • Sensor Initializations, ECU Adoption, Coding & Module Set Up functionality.

Average Price: $850 – $1000

1. FOXWELL NT510 KIA/HYUNDAI SCANNER

Foxwell Nt510 Full_0

If you do your own Hyundai / Kia repairs and are looking for a scanner a cheap multi-system scanner that goes beyond the basic OBD2 troubleshooting this is a perfect choice. Not only is the Foxwell NT510 multi-system scanner affordable but it provides several capabilities that you only find on professional level diagnostic scanners. Besides being able to scan the ABS, SRS/Airbag, ECU and Transmission codes it offers several other features such as:

  • Reset the service oil reminder
  • TPMS programming
  • Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) calibration
  • Program and code control units.
  • Diagnose chassis, powertrain and body systems.
  • Reads and clears diagnostic trouble codes. Reset CEL/MIL light.
  • Live sensors data streaming.
  • ABS/SRS/Airbag, ECU and Transmission Diagnostics

Note that the Foxwell NT510 comes loaded with the software for certain manufacturers in this case for Hyundai/Kia. While Foxwell scanners work on other makes you will need a scanner loaded with the correct software for that specific brand.

Price: $150-$200

CONCLUSION

Which is the best OBD2 scanner for Hyundai and Kia? It really depends on your needs and budget. Choosing an OBD2 scanner that will allow you to perform advanced troubleshooting can be tricky. As we mentioned earlier, if your main goal is only to read and clear the Check Engine Light than all you need is a basic OBD2 code reader. If your goal is to perform in-depth troubleshooting these are your top choices.

Best Overall OBD2 Scanner

If you are looking for a reasonably priced scanner that goes beyond the basic OBD-2 troubleshooting and works with all your car then Launch Creader CRP123 would be a good choice. You will be able to use it on multiple makes and models and will be able to scan the Engine, Transmission, SRS/Airbag and ABS systems.

Least Expensive Scanner for Hyundai/Kia

If you need an affordable Hyundai scanner that offers similar functions to Hyundai dealer tool then the Foxwell NT510 for Hyundai  is the best choice. It won’t work on other brands since it will have the software just for Hyundai/Kia, but it can diagnose more problems than the Launch Creader.

Best Diagnostic Scanner for Hyundai mechanics

If money is not a concern or if you are an auto repair shop and need to have a true professional scanner the best choice is the Autel MaxiDAS DS808 . It provides similar troubleshooting capabilities to the dealer scanner. It works on over 20 car makes and is the least expensive scanner that provides such level of diagnostics.

Review on Autel MaxiDAS DS808 Full Diagnostic Tool

Paid one Autel Maxidas DS808 scanner and service reset tool on obdii365 and was asked to provide an objective review on its operation and capabilities. I was interested to see how things had developed for Autel, as my previous experience of Autel diagnostic equipment was the first generation, Autel Maxidas DS708.
  1. First impression to the full package
When Maxidas DS808 arrived at me, the carry case looked something differently as the Autel DS808. Inside the case the host hardware was a compact, smart, rugged, android tablet. This was partnered by many good quality diagnostic adapters including those non-standard 16pin connectors, as well as a thick user manual on how to operate this machine.
autel-ds808-package
  1. Autel Maxidas DS808 tablet
The Autel Maxidas DS808 tablet was light and compact and was very comfortable in hand. For such a compact package, the Power Sources is optional incl.: Internal Battery Pack, vehicle power, external power supply by connecting the packed power adapter. For the battery life it has a large capacity 3.7 V/3200 mAh lithium-polymer battery. Besides its new processor (Cortex-A9 processor (1.5 GHz), 7.0” LCD Capacitive Touchscreen and the Ambient Light Sensor which can detect ambient brightness when it is inside the workshop, thanks to the screen finish and a good quality display.
  1. Feeling on general use – quick and smart to operate and update
The software look and feel are both very good in terms of layout and size and the touch screen operation worked flawlessly in conjunction with its large, clear icons. Ds808 was quick to get going from the initial power up to operate. The response in moving through the menus and executing tasks was immediate.
Downloading and running updates speed (which depends on the internet connection speed) was reasonable. The ‘services/update’ section of the software on the Autel DS808 notifies the user of pending updates, and it’s a ‘click and go’ procedure to set the updates running. And During general use I found that the Wifi communication connected stably when I used it.

  1. Autel DS808 performance:
The Autel Maxidas DS808 has wide and comprehensive system coverage, covers all of the prevailing makes and models. A detailed report of software coverage was beyond the scope of my brief. However, I did use the Autel Maxidas DS808 for a typical range of general workshop tasks (ECU information, trouble codes, freeze frame, live data, active test and special functions) on a typical range of workshop makes and models.
Also the “auto detect VIN” and “manually input VIN” are user-friendly design.

special-functions
  1. Graphing a live data stream:
One of the features I believe that a diagnostic scan tool should have is graphing a live data stream. The reason that this is so important is to enable the vehicle technician to examine the relationships between the various sensors, actuators and calculated values. This is critical for intermittent fault finding and for vehicle problems which don’t set diagnostic trouble codes. In this respect the Autel Maxidas DS808 did a good job. The live data is selected from an array of available parameters and then graphed. The graphed data can be shown as separate graphs or combined in a job graph. The scales are auto ranging and they can be reset to align them to the current operating conditions.
datastream
  1. Many special functions
Another nice feature is its special functions, especially when it compares with maxidas ds708. These functions perform various component adaptations, allowing you to recalibrate or configure certain components after making repairs or replacement.
The main menu displays the supported special functions for the test vehicle. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the desired function. When the operation is done, an execution status message such as Completed, Finished or Successful, displays. Tap the ESC button to exit the function.
The most commonly performed service functions include: Oil Reset Service, TPMS Programming Service, EPB Service, ABS/SRS Services, SAS Calibration Service, DPF Regeneration Service
By following the on-screen instructions to select appropriate execution options, enter correct values or data, and perform necessary actions, the system will guide my through the complete performance for various service operations.
ds808-functions
Using ds708 many years, so I quickly find there are several applications are newly developed, they are AutoVIN Technology, MaxiFix Cloud-based information system, Shop manager. Valuing the user experience is the Company soul, I think Autel Company do a good job. I try these new applications one-by-one, and prove what they claim in the following table.
ds808-applications-1
ds808-applications-2
  1. Data logging reports: submit via wifi and print
Autel Maxidas DS808 is allowed to submit Data Logging Reports in diagnostics. The reports are saved to the internal memory (which is a not insignificant 32 GB, depending on the hardware specification). As the tablet is equipped with WIFI, these can be emailed to the office or directly to the customer.
The Data Manager application is used to store, print, and review the saved files. Most operations are controlled through the toolbar.
The reports are able to be saved in PDF format
In the toolbar buttons, you could see the “Print”, click it and go. Printing the reports directly is a little more challenging. In my case, I had to install a separate PDF viewer, and to realize the wireless data printing function, I need to install the printer driver program by following the instruction. This made getting the reports off the device a little long winded. My opinion is that it would be more convenient if the print button could be configured to call other installed printer drivers.
ds808-data-manager-1
ds808-data-manager-2
  1. TeamViewer Quick Support program:
The “Remote Desk” app is remarkable, it launches the TeamViewer Quick Support program, it is a simple, fast and secure remote control screen. I could use it to receive ad-hoc remote support from Autel’s support center, colleagues, or friends, by allowing them to control my MaxiDAS tablet on their PC. Therefore I need not phone call any more. TeamViewer ID would be the phone number. Make sure the Display Tablet is connected to the Internet before launching the Remote Desk application.

Conclusion:
I think highly of Autel Maxidas DS808, I highly recommend it to the small repair shop. It is rugged, running fast, easy to use, light and add many special functions comparing autel ds708.

Pros

1- a wide range of vehicle coverage and frequent update

mobilemechanicepsom – Saturday, January 28, 2012 2:23:01 PM

I have the ds708 and brought it when it was first released, at that time i have to honestly say it very nearly went back (via there office window) however now they have the coverage sorted and the updates coming thick and fast it really is a fantastic bit of kit. If you have a smart arse phone that can act as a wireless hub then you can use the ds to access autodata online plus of course any other internet site.

2- good at Japanese domestic vehicles and Australian vehicles

Silk – 12/21/11 12:25 AM

We have been using the MaxiDas for about 18 months, and am sort of happy with it. The NZ market is very biased to used Japanese domestic vehicles, and they have done a very good in this sector. Our guys work from Australia and it also works very well on Australian vehicles… better than factory. We are a Mitsi dealership, and it is almost as good on Mitsi as our factory MUTT III.

3- good at American vehicles, like Ford

Shockwave – 08-14-2015, 06:19 AM

We have a solus ultra, ds708, Maximus 2.0 and Otc nemisys scan tool some work better than others depending on make

For American vehicles the solus shines but the German vehicles I like the Maximus 2.0
The ds708 is great for certain test like misfire on fords

Is this primarily a one make shop or for you work on any make because I will tell you bmw dealerships around me prefer auto logic to factory scan tool

4- work on OBD I car and perform well on 2003 Olds Alero

The_Eric – 01/05/12 09:29 PM

I have the MaxiDas unit on demo from the tool rep. I can say that I’ll likely opt not to buy it. One of the big reasons for me buying a tool of this caliber is to be able to use it on the wife’s OBD I car and access her ABS and airbag info. This unit will not communicate with OBD I in site of the fact that it comes with the GM 12 pin connector. Also noticed some (simple) spelling errors (like engein instead of engine). Not sure why that bugs me but it does. I plugged it into an 2003 Olds Alero and was pleasantly surprised at it’s level of accessibility. I could reprogram key fobs, reset trans adaptives, do CKP variation relearns and command several relays and widgets for testing purposes. Also had access to all live data in the BCM, SRS and ABS.

The Snap-On rep stopped by this week and made a smoking deal on a Solus Ultra. It’s supposed to be WAY faster than previous offerings and still be quite capable. I’ll have it to demo next Wednesday.

5- work well on Ford & GM cars

RWI – Posted October 01, 2013 – 05:34 AM

I’ve owned one for about a year, got it between 1200 & 1300.  Lack of battery means starting from scratch if unplugged.  Does do software updates over wifi and they are pretty frequent.  Live data has some of the best coverage I have seen for an aftermarket scan tool.  For the money is can’t be beat.  Can be a little interesting to get used to, seems like they copy the oem tool pretty closely.  I have dealer Ford & GM tools and the Autel is an exact clone for the most part.  If you do a lot of the same make but the factory scanner, if you want a general shop tool this pretty damn good.  Like others have said, no bells and whistles, no scope or trouble shooter, just good basic info.  I use this mainly for Chrysler as the factory tool is insanely expensive and I am pretty pleased with it.

6- test ok on ford diesels and BMW

Cliff – Posted October 01, 2013 – 06:26 AM

This is the only scanner I have. Just had a Denali in the shop. The owner had it at another shop in the area that uses otc products. The genysis couldn’t access the drivers seat module. The ds708 was able to not only read read the module but had good bidirectional support as well. The ford diesel coverage is very good. The gm diesel support is hit or miss. Haven’t tried dodge. TheEuropean coverage is excellent. Bmw support is great. Mine even works on pre obd2 models using the proprietary bmw connector. There is almost no tech support. I would not purchase through Asian sources. Seems those units aren’t warranted through the Autel us division. I bought mine through aes wave. Those guys are great. I have been surprised by this unit almost everyone I use it.

7- good scanner for its price

David_E39 – 07-26-2012, 09:56 PM

i don’t really rely in my scanners for obd1 cars. But to be honest the autel obd2 tool is a pretty good scanner for its price. It can only do so much and that is the reason why it us price at $1300. There is no such thing as any scanner that can do everything that’s why now days a lot of shop have more then just 1 scanner. But for the price you pay for the maxidas ds708 it is totally worth having for what it is capable of doing. Don’t want to pick on anyone or start any argument but its just my 2 cents about what i think of the scanner and i’m sure some people might disagree and some might agree but to each their own opinions.

8- NO COMPLAITS

Vssjim – 10-21-2012, 07:59 PM

I have no complaint with my MaxiDas and would pay for the update and move forward and don’t forget every scan tool will let you down at some point. Did you call customer service or use the feedback service when you had a problem. I have found the people on the customer service from Autel ok, but from Snap on not very helpful and kind of ugly when they had a problem they didn’t like to admit to it or fix it.

9- can download files to SD card with Maxidas

Shurk06_83 – 10-22-2015, 04:37 AM

maxidas might be slow if ur running the older operating system i did a big update a few weeks ago and it faster then ever

as for slow if you do a full scan of any car it will take time as the bus system on the cars computer is not very fast

and as for updates running out its not a big problem as long as some one has the new files and can post them u can download them and load them up to the sd card using the usb sd reader u got with your maxidas

If anyone needs updates i can download them and post them and help you figure out how to load them on your sd card

Cons

1- disappointing coverage of old Japanese vehicles

Silk – 12/21/11 12:25 AM

What I’m disappointed in is coverage of older vehicles – we have all the old Japanese plugs – Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, and it works on none of them, the only OBDI it works on is Honda, it’s useless on the rest. But does Mercedes (but not my 1994 NZ new C220) and BMW.

2- Autel DS708 scanner will be locked up for IP address in wrong country

Autotunehouse – Wednesday, August 24, 2011 8:43:57 AM

Hi all, just a friendly advice do not buy DS708 from China trading companies or on internet. Only buy from dealers because Autel update software will be IP sensitive later and will lock up the scanner if the IP address is wrong country. Need to pay to unlock. And some local software are exclusive only to local dealer. If you purchase cheap online then you will have no access for local software update, for example, Holden and Australia Ford Falcon advanced software. Big difference of the local software versions. You pay for what you get and not worthy of paying more in the future to unlock the scanner or pay local dealer for exclusive software updates. That’s my friendly and honest advice for Autel MaxiDas DS708 scanner. But it’s really a good tool for diagnosis, not like other scan tools a ripp off.

3- low to load software if it’s used for a long time
Silk – 12/21/11 12:25 AM

After using the old Snap-On brick for 10 years I find it very slow to load, but everyone else seems to think it’s fast. We pay NZ$4,000 for this thing and think it’s cheap, so in the US you are getting it for small change.
